Can a Hair Dryer Cause Hair Loss?

Unless you are examined by a trained physician, identifying the cause of your hair loss can be a guessing game. One of the questions we get asked a lot is whether using a hair dryer or blow-dryer to dry your hair can cause or accelerate hair loss. If you’re noticing an abnormal amount of hair loss while blow-drying your hair, it’s only natural to wonder whether there’s a connection.

The reality is that as long as you’re not burning your skin or irritating your scalp with your hair dryer, it won’t cause hair loss. While using your hair dryer on its low or medium settings can help minimize the amount of heat directed at your scalp, even using it on a higher setting shouldn’t cause a problem as long as it doesn’t get too close to your scalp.

That being said, heat from your blow-dryer can have an adverse effect. Daily hair drying can cause your hair to lose moisture, which can cause your hair to be dry and brittle. But this won’t have an effect on your natural hair growth cycle. Giving your hair a few days’ break from the hair dryer can help bring some of the moisture back.

Watch Bosley Medical Director Dr. Ken Washenik talk about how hair dryers can affect your hair.

If you’re starting to notice your hair thinning, there’s a chance it could be a more serious issue, such as male or female pattern baldness, also known as androgenetic alopecia. Bosley has new non-surgical and surgical hair loss solutions that use the latest proven technology, for both men and women.
