Bad Hair Transplant? Bosley Can Help Fix It
A hair transplant is the permanent solution to hair loss. When done right, that means beautiful, long-lasting results – a fuller head of hair and a procedure so natural-looking that no one will know you got a hair transplant unless you tell them.
However, when done wrong, that permanent solution can turn into a permanent bad hair day.
While it’s always best to schedule a free consultation and come to Bosley first to achieve the best hair restoration outcome, our industry-leading surgeons are up to the task of fixing hair transplants gone wrong to the best of their ability.
We’ll go over the most common hair transplant disasters we see and how we go about making things right.
Why Botched Overseas Hair Transplants are So Common
Here at Bosley, we’ve seen more botched overseas hair transplants than we can count.
A high-quality hair transplant is as much of an art as it is a science. It requires striking a balance between maintaining a natural-looking hairline, ensuring that the donor area remains full and healthy, and achieving maximum density in thinning areas.
Bosley, The World’s Most Experienced Hair Restoration ExpertⓇ, is home to the leading hair transplant surgeons in the world. They specialize in creating beautiful hairlines using industry-leading technology.
The other guys? Not so much.
Simply put, high competition and lack of government regulation cause many popular overseas hair transplant destinations to cut corners – often with disastrous results.
Overseas hair transplant procedures are often performed by non-doctors with little-to-no training. Plus, in an effort to provide an attractively high number of grafts, many clinics split hair follicles, overcrowd hairlines, and overharvest follicles from the back of the head, yielding unnatural looking results and in some cases, poor health outcomes.
Types of Botched Hair Transplants (With Photo Examples)
Overharvesting
Many overseas hair transplant technicians overharvest hair follicle grafts – meaning they remove and transplant too many hair follicles, which can cause thin, uneven, patchy hair in places that used to be full.

Unnatural-Looking Hairlines
While Bosley surgeons focus on providing a natural-looking, virtually undetectable, age-appropriate hairline, many overseas clinics provide hairlines that are overcrowded or so low that they don’t look natural.
Uneven Graft Placement
Transplanted follicles may follow an uneven, unnatural-looking pattern. We recently fixed a man’s botched hair transplant. He went to Turkey and was horrified by the results, even immediately following the procedure. Not only did his technicians fail to focus on the most-thinning areas, two different technicians worked on different sides of the head – yielding totally mismatched graft placement on the right and left side.

Hair Plugs
Hair plugs are an outdated hair transplant method that involves removing round “plugs” of skin containing multiple hair follicles, then implanting them into balding or thinning zones. This method was most prominent in the 70s and 80s. What used to be a revolutionary hair transplant method a few decades ago qualifies as a bad hair transplant today – here’s a former hair plug patient whose hair we fixed:

How Bosley Repairs Bad Hair Transplants
Bosley’s experienced team of the leading hair transplant surgeons in the world are up to the task to fix bad hair transplants, whether done overseas, years ago, or at other clinics. Provided enough donor hair remains for a second hair transplant, our doctors can help fill in uneven areas, adjust hairline design, and maximize density in poor, patchy hair transplants.
When a Bad Hair Transplant Can’t Be Fixed
Sadly, not all ruined hair transplants can be fixed. A hair transplant involves moving healthy, growing hair follicles from one area of the head to another – if not enough healthy follicles remain, a hair transplant is no longer a viable option.
Here’s an example of a patient who recently came in for a consultation, after getting a terrible hair transplant in Turkey. This patient said the clinic marked his head in “quadrants,” then ran out of grafts and had to leave one area open. He said the technician told him to just grow his hair long and comb it over that spot. Since the Turkey clinic had overharvested his follicles and placed them so poorly, we were not able to fix this one.
Avoid a Botched Hair Transplant & Get Your Hair Transplant Done Right – The First Time
Fixing a bad hair transplant can end up costing a lot more than getting your hair transplant done right in the first place – and in some cases, it may not even be possible. You only have so many healthy, transplantable grafts on your head, so it’s important to get things done right the first time to achieve the safest, best-looking outcomes possible.
There’s no substitute for the skill and experience of a highly trained hair transplant physician. At Bosley, all of our procedures are performed by experienced physicians using the latest hair transplant techniques and technology.
