Bosley Medical Director Dr. Ken Washenik explains the connection between scalp inflammation and hair loss.
Find out what actions you can take to avoid thinning hair due to scalp inflammation.
“Scalp hygiene is, as you might guess, obviously important to your hair and hair growth. And what I mean by that is any sort of inflammation on your scalp – so dandruff, seborrheic dermatitis – those types of inflammation can lead to hair loss. It’s hard to quantitate, but a number of different studies have indicated that maybe ten percent of your hair loss, if you have hair loss, comes from inflammation on your scalp.
So, your choice of shampoo is important. If you have dandruff, a scalp condition like that, then you should use an anti-dandruff shampoo. There are a number of them. You should look at different active ingredients and see which one works best for you, and use one on a regular basis.
When asked if certain types of shampoo are better or worse for hair loss, the one thing I can tell you for sure is if you have any sort of scaling dandruff on your scalp, inflammation, you should use a dandruff shampoo. There are a good number of different types with different active ingredients. You should find one that works nicely for you, and use it on a regular basis.
What I find helps many of my patients is to alternate two different dandruff shampoos with different active ingredients, and I find that that can help some people whose dandruff is a little more resistant.” -Dr. Ken Washenik
