Meet the Doctors: Dr. Audrey Bauer

Looking for a hair transplant surgeon in Denver, Colorado? We sat down with Dr. Audrey Bauer, M.D. of Bosley’s Denver office to chat about her career, her approach to hair restoration, and a few of her favorite things about living in Denver. Read on to get to know Dr. Audrey Bauer!

How long have you practiced in Denver? What’s been your experience living there?

I’ve lived in Denver on and off since 1992. I started living here shortly after college – my ex-husband was in the Air Force and we were stationed here. After I left the military in 2013, I came back to Denver because I loved it so much. Now, I consider it my permanent home!

What inspired you to become a doctor?

I always loved science. After graduating from college, I worked both for clinical laboratories and pharma – I enjoyed the science aspect of it, but at the same time I felt like I was missing something by not having any interaction with people. Seven years after graduating, I decided to go to medical school to combine my love of science with my desire to work with humans.

What drew you to Bosley?

What drew me to Bosley was the people I first interacted with. I actually came in contact with some of the Bosley people online, from Facebook groups around aesthetic medicine. Right off the bat, I could tell they were interesting, kind, and knowledgeable, and as I got to know other people within the company that was only reinforced.

How is what you do at Bosley similar/different from your previous practice?

What I’ve loved about transitioning from typical medicine and surgery to hair transplants is: unlike general surgery where people are quite sick and may often have poor and sad outcomes, there’s none of that in hair transplants. Every patient I meet is happy, healthy, and excited to be there – and then, I get to see them after a year of healing and growth and they’re even happier, overjoyed with their results. There’s something extremely rewarding about having my patients come back and getting to see the transformation in their appearance and confidence.

What’s your favorite thing about working at Bosley?

My team. From the office manager to the nurse to our medical assistants, everybody here is really great to work with. It’s a really energetic, fun team environment.

Tell us a memorable work/patient story.

One patient came in for his one-year visit fairly recently. He was only in his late 20s or early 30s, and when he first came in the year before, he was nearly bald – he always kept his hair fairly closely shaved since he had such marked hair loss. He came in for his one-year-checkup and he was completely unrecognizable. Since his transplant, he had started letting his curly, wavy, dark hair grow. I was amazed – he went from looking like a middle-aged man to a young man in just that one year. It totally changed his demeanor – made a huge difference not just in his appearance but also his whole personality. I was just overjoyed for him!

How have your perceptions of hair restoration changed since you started working at Bosley?

Prior to getting to understand and spend time in this business, I really thought of hair restoration as being something for old people. I figured hair transplants would only be a consideration for people in their sixties or older. Now, of course, I know that many men start losing their hair in their mid-20s, and the earlier a person catches it and takes steps to restore their hair, the better outcomes they have. We’ve seen people get a hair transplant in their late 20s or early 30s and keep their hair well into their 60s or 70s. It’s a sustainable, natural-looking procedure that can help men and women of any age.

If you WEREN’T a doctor, what other work could you see yourself doing and why?

I think I would become a massage therapist. I love helping people and working with my hands. I’d seek out work that’s meditative, giving, and offers a great result at the end.

Describe your ideal Sunday afternoon.

I’m a warm-weather person – I do NOT like being cold. So, my ideal Sunday afternoon would be in the summertime, at the beach or at the pool, spending time with family and friends, playing board games (probably Scrabble or Yahtzee) and hanging out by the water.

Give a local recommendation – name a local restaurant, park, venue, destination, etc. that you LOVE right now!

I’m the first to admit that I’m an ice cream addict. I’ll go any time of the week, and my favorite spot is Bonnie Brae Ice Cream on University Boulevard. (Side note: I bumped into United States Surgeon General Vivek Murthy there once!)
